North America Compliance Specialist - Hazardous Materials (#107350)

At Amazon, Safety is our number one concern both for our employees and for our customers. We are currently seeking candidates to fill our North America Compliance Specialist - Hazardous Materials position located in Seattle.

With tremendous growth in product types offered for sale and fulfillment throughout North America (including hazardous materials as defined by the U.S. D.O.T), Amazon is looking for an experienced candidate to support the goals of the North America Product Compliance Team. This person will help drive the day to day policies, procedures, processes and accompanying software which ensures hazardous materials products are stored and shipped in accordance with local, state, federal and international regulations. The end result will be a system to seamlessly integrate regulated products into the Amazon front end website and back-end fulfillment services.

Areas of responsibility include:

  • Product set-up and approval: Research (and manage processes for researching) whether products are regulated as hazmat. Work with category buyers to ensure hazmat products are properly classified and set up in the internal system and that only products that comply with the Amazon hazmat management program are sourced.
  • Tracking and reporting: Maintain and improve database and tracking system for all hazmat product sold by Amazon NA – maintain internal metrics reporting for hazmat and fulfill reporting requirements as demanded by local law.
  • Identify and report general compliance issues that may arise through the work process; write and revise standard operating procedures.
  • Review technical publications, articles and abstracts to stay abreast of current regulations and trends, ensure appropriate actions are taken and communicated to all parties involved when necessary.
  • Transportation: serve as a point of contact for carriers in issues relating to hazmat carriage; ensure goods are marked and labeled in accordance with dangerous goods transport regulations and that documentation is provided to carriers as agreed in contracts;
  • Fulfillment Center (FC) Safety management (transportation issues): ensure internal hazmat safety requirements relating to in/outbound marking and labeling are being adhered to; support FC Health and Safety in the safe management of dangerous substances storage and waste treatment;
  • Documentation: manage and maintain internal Material Safety Data Sheet’s
  • Manage relationships with dangerous goods specialists of vendors and carriers, as well as authorities; clarify Amazon regulatory compliance and quality expectations, standards, process and forward any relevant SOPs; communicate program changes; resolve issues between Amazon, vendors and authorities
  • Training: ensure all stakeholders (buying, FC staff) are regularly trained and updated as per internal and local regulatory requirements.
  • Audit/safety incident management: Audit the hazmat program and the compliance with this program in FCs (this includes inspecting FCs as necessary); report on accidents and other safety issues as required by Amazon and in accordance with local law.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or public administration, and 3+ years of experience in hazardous materials compliance management (preferably retailer experience).
  • Knowledge/experience directly related to hazardous materials storage and transportation required. Previous work experience in a fast paced, changing/growing organization.
  • Familiarity with typical software packages (Microsoft Suite) is a must.
  • Project management and solid communication skills are also a must.
