#8 DGAC Offers Conferences Abroad

In 1999, DGAC and Pira International joined forces to host the first ever DGAC Conference in Europe. The product of several years' worth of planning, the conference was entitled "Rationalising International Regulations" and took place in Brussels, Belgium.

Review the Conference Summary below:

"During the last few years efforts at harmonisation, rationalisation, reformation and restructuring the regulations have been ongoing through the UN and its specialist agencies. Most of this work is beginning to reach a conclusion and the impact on industry will be far reaching.

"This unique conference provides the opportunity to examine recent changes to UN recommendations, ICAO/IATA and IMO requirements; to learn about steps towards restructuring the IMDG code and RID/ADR; and to consider the impacts on air transport regulations.

"Those transporting goods between Europe and the USA frequently encounter practical regulatory problems. Shipper presenters from both sides of the Atlantic will comment on their experiences and offer tips on how to minimise these perils such that the commerce will keep moving.

"The Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor requirement will directly impact European companies and indirectly affect shippers in the USA. A panel of European government officials will discuss programme implementation in their respective countries."

That first program was such a success it was followed by six more, the most recent held in 2007 in Prague. Read an extensive review of the second International Conference held in Amsterdam in 2000.

DGAC has been committed to international cooperation and harmonization since the beginning. Even before incorporation, DGAC was recognized as an official observer at the United Nations (learn more).

Throughout the years DGAC's international presence grew steadily, and hosting a conference that spanned the Atlantic seemed a foregone conclusion. At the time of the first International conference in 1999, DGAC had 25 members from outside of the United States. Compare that to DGAC's two non-US members in 1979.

DGAC's programs (or programmes) from the past seven international conferences have featured some of the top regulators and members of industry from Europe discussing cutting-edge issues.

The first conference in 1999 featured several speakers on the revisions to the UN Model Regulations, the ICAO Technical Instructions and the IMDG Code. Learn more about DGAC's role in these revisions.
