#11 The George L. Wilson Award
"Awarded for outstanding achievement in and contributions to the field of hazardous materials transportation and safety."
George L. Wilson was the first managing Director of DGAC (then HMAC) and was instrumental to its founding in the 1970's
(Read more about the organization's founding).
Wilson's unexpected passing in 1981 led the members of HMAC to create an award in his honor, the first of its kind in recognizing
those actively involved in ensuring the safety of hazardous materials transportation.
Stanley Hoffman was the first recipient in 1982. See the June 5, 1982 Courier article to the right.
The award has been given out 24 times since its inception in 1982. At the
30th Annual Conference & Expo in Savannah this November,
it will be given out for the 25th time to a deserving
recipient nominated by those in the industry and selected by a committee of industry personnel.
Here are the nominating criteria:
The Wilson Award is presented each year to the individual, organization, or company that has demonstrated outstanding
achievement in the field of hazardous materials transportation safety.
While any significant act or series of actions could
qualify a nominee for consideration, the award is not intended to recognize those who have merely served for many years in
the hazardous materials community. Rather, the awardee must be one whose work consistently reflects the goals and objectives of
DGAC.
Whether through significant contributions to the development and understanding of national and/or international regulations,
advancements to better respond to hazardous materials incidents, efforts to enlighten the public in its knowledge of
hazardous materials transport, or in any other way positively advancing the safe transport of dangerous goods, the recipient's
actions will have been characterized by performance well beyond the normal expectations of industry.
