Wheelchair on plane bursts into flames

An electric wheelchair burst into flames seconds after being removed from the hold of a jet, it has emerged.

The incident, which took place shortly after a holiday jet landed at Manchester Airport, with more than 200 passengers on board.

It triggered a warning from the Civil Aviation Authority about the dangers of carrying electrical goods on an aircraft.

The plane, a First Choice Boeing 757, had landed at the airport after a flight from Fureteventura.

Ground staff at Manchester airport were removing luggage from the hold when they saw sparks coming from the wheelchair.

#11 The George L. Wilson Award

"Awarded for outstanding achievement in and contributions to the field of hazardous materials transportation and safety."

George L. Wilson was the first managing Director of DGAC (then HMAC) and was instrumental to its founding in the 1970's (Read more about the organization's founding).

Wilson's unexpected passing in 1981 led the members of HMAC to create an award in his honor, the first of its kind in recognizing those actively involved in ensuring the safety of hazardous materials transportation.

Performance-Oriented Packaging - 3 Days

Click here for a printable course description This course is designed to provide an understanding of the requirements for non-bulk UN performance-oriented packaging testing, record-keeping and selection as it applies to hazardous materials transportation. this course WILL NOT cover packaging for Class 1 (explosives), Division 6.2 (infectious substances) or Class 7 (radioactives).

Meets applicable requirements for initial and recurrent training.

Regulations Covered: US DOT HMR (49CFR)
Prerequisite: HMT-100
Materials Provided: US DOT HMR (49CFR) and various handouts
Class hours: 8AM - 5PM
Sign-in 7:30 - 8AM on the first day
Class ends at 1PM on the last day

Registration fee = $675.00 ($595.00 DGAC members)
