Al Roberts was elected as Vice President of DGAC in 2005, after having joined DGAC as its president in 2000, shortly
after his retirement as the Associate
Administrator for Hazardous Materials Safety in DOT's Research and Special Programs
Administration. In that position, he was responsible for
day-to-day management of DOT's hazardous materials program since his appointment to director of a predecessor office in 1975.
He completed 43 years of Federal service prior to his retirement on December 31, 1999.
During his tenure at RSPA, Roberts managed a complete overhaul of the Federal regulatory program for hazardous materials
transportation safety. And through more than twenty-five years in international programs, including ten years as Chairman of the
United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, he participated in the evolution of harmonized worldwide
standards for hazardous materials transportation.
In addition to his Federal service, which includes four years in the Air Force, five years as a motor carrier safety
specialist with the Interstate Commerce Commission, and a year at the National Transportation Safety Board, Mr. Roberts was
vice-president of a Class I motor carrier in Pennsylvania. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Logistics from the
Pennsylvania State University.
